An Overview of the Society.The Huddersfield and District Family History Society was formed in 1987 and it's aims are to promote and encourage mutual help between people interested in Family History and Genealogy. It caters particularly for those with interests in the Metropolitan District of Kirklees. The area comprises Batley, Colne Valley, Denby Dale, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Holme Valley, Kirkburton, Meltham, Mirfield, and Spen Valley. An area of nearly 160 square miles. Within it's boundaries lie the eleven ancient parishes of Almondbury, Batley, Birstall, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Emley, Hartshead, Kirkburton, Kirkheaton, Mirfield and Thornhill. Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, usually in Huddersfield Town Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Occasionally, due to unforeseen circumstances, it may be necessary to change the programme. Therefore, if attending a particular meeting, please look in the local Huddersfield Newspaper ( under stop press "Family History" ) or particularly if travelling from afar, please contact the programme Secretary or check on the Programme page of the website two or three days prior to the meeting for correct details. We will endeavour to ensure that any late alterations are posted on the website as soon as is possible. The Huddersfield and District Family History Society Journal, is published and distributed to our members four times a year, in January, April, July and October. The society's Project Group, has completed a full transcription of both the 1841 and 1851 Censuses for the whole of our area (more than 200,000 names and 1/90th of the population of England and Wales for 1851); these are available for purchase in booklet form and also on CD-ROM. The group is currently transcribing Parish Registers (baptism's, marriages and burials) for all the major local churches. This information is available in printed form, as is information from the ever-growing database. Please see the 1841 & 1851 Census page, or Parish Records page, for the most up to date lists, these are also available from these pages as printer friendly versions. Alternatively, please write to the bookseller, enclosing an SAE or two IRC's, for a publications list, (see Committee for the address). As a registered charity, the society is wholly dependent upon
sales of our publications, research and search fees, and donations to the
society, to be able to continue with our aims as stated above. Therefore, should you feel that you would like to
make a donation to the society, this can now be done online
via PayPal,
using the PayPal Secure Server.
