    ‘Gruelling Experiences’

    Three centuries of the workhouse

dewsbury_workhouseThis illustrated talk by Peter Higginbotham will tell the remarkable story of the workhouse from 1601 until 1948 in Dewsbury and the surrounding area

Peter Higginbotham first became interested in workhouses while researching his family history. He discovered that his great-great-grandfather had died in a workhouse and that his death had been registered by the matron. He also became fascinated by the buildings after seeing an old Victorian Ordnance Survey map of the town where he then lived. At the edge of town was a huge hexagonal shape which dwarfed everything in the area. Eager to discover more, he visited the local libraries but found that they had precious little information about the large and fearsome building which had stood there for the best part of a century.

There is history, poetry and humour as we take you through some of our beautiful scenery and show what makes us love England so much. You will see familiar and unfamiliar landmarks and hear about some of the old traditions still practiced today.

We end with a quiz with multi choice answers just to see if you have been paying attention!
We are often asked if we work for the tourist board!
There is so much to see in England and this presentation reflects the wonderful places we can visit and each has a story to tell. We aim to show you some of these in under an hour!

This is our favourite show with some of our best photography. Just the show to prepare you for Summer and show you what a great country we live in.

    Speaker: Eric Houlder

Coaching Memories briefly describes travel two hundred years ago, and then moves on to the subject of the Great North Road in Yorkshire to illustrate the mail coaches, stage coaches, post Chaises, inns, and the people who ran them, as well as the travellers.

The talk also shows the inns as they were then, and as they are now, juxtaposing contemporary images with Eric's award-winning photographs. Some sound effects too.
