One of the earliest projects which the Society's volunteer project team completed was to index (virtually a full transcription) of 1841 and 1851 censuses for whole of our area. Recent efforts have been concentrated on the great number of Parish Registers in the area and the baptism registers are now virtually completed. Non-conformist baptism registers are now being transcribed.
The society also took part in the Nation Burials Index (NBI) project.
Transcriptions are checked twice, before being published in booklet form and on CD-ROM.
Additional volunteers are always welcome, and training will of course be provided.
As well as producing publications for sale, indexes to the transcriptions have been entered into the Society's "Gendex" database which is searchable in the Members Area of the web site as well as at the Root Cellar. Work is also in progress on adding the whole of the transcriptions to the Society "Oracle" database which can currently be searched at the Root Cellar.
The Members Area of the web site also provides the facility to search surnames in the 1841 and 1851 Census. This facility also includes the number of times that the surname appears in the census.
The society also offers a research service , utilising all of our transcriptions, our extensive data and library collection.
