Place-Names of Huddersfield

by George Redmonds published by David Shore 2008

There are two main aims in this dictionary. The first is to explain the origins of all the major place-names in the township of Huddersfield, including those for Bradley which have previously been largely ignored. Where possible I go beyond the etymologies and examine the special circumstances in which each name originated. This information is part of the warp and woof of the township's history over the last nine hundred years and throws light on a number of topics such as clearance, settlement, husbandry, communications and industial practices. The second aim is to include information about the major street names of the town, even where this involves crossing township boundaries in more recent times.
