Turnpike Roads for Local and Family Historians

By Edgar Holroyd-Doveton

This study traces the development of the turnpike roads across Britain. It explores the stimulus and development of these roads over the two hundred years between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

In the first section of the book, Edgar Holroyd-Doveton provides a narrative to this period, focusing on the extent to which turnpike roads were a part of local communities as well as the natural landscape. The administration of turnpike trusts, the people involved in running the roads and the innovative work of road builders are all covered.

The second section of the book identifies resources available for local and family historians wishing to research turnpike roads.
